Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble: Witches on the Water is returning to Oscoda

Grab your cone-shaped hats and best brooms — Witch’s Week is coming to Oscoda.

“I started Witch’s Night Out (in another state) in 2017,” said organizer Belinda Brunner Kusibab. “It was just a fun thing to get my girlfriends out together. When I moved to Michigan, I had a scavenger hunt in downtown Romeo.”

The tradition came with Kusibab when she moved to Oscoda, and it’s grown ever since. The event, now dubbed Witches on the Water, runs Oct. 18-25 with a paint party, special sales, a scavenger hunt, a pageant, crafts and more.

The event kicks off Oct. 18 with a Witches Tea Party at the Tea Corner Emporium. There’s reserved seating for $25, and the event begins at 1 p.m.

The next event at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 is Witches Paint Night at the Historic Ballroom in Oscoda. Participants can choose from a haunting witch, ghost or raven masterpiece, and there’s bonus points for painting in costume. The cost is $35.

As the weekend nears, participants can enjoy Sea Glass Crafting at the Historic Ballroom, beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 24. Attendees can create a witch hat, bat, pumpkin or leafy motif with Kusibab’s Queen Bee Soiree. The cost is $45.

Afterward, witches can fly downtown for potion-themed drinks at Tait’s Bill of Fare Spookeasy.

Witches assembled for the Witches on the Water event

The highlight of the week is the Witches Party and Scavenger Hunt beginning at 12 p.m. Oct. 25. The cost is $35 for lunch or $15 for the scavenger hunt alone. Family pricing is available for two adults and two children at $70.

“Witches will compete for the best cackle, the best hat, the best outfit, the witchiest attitude,” Kusibab said. “We’ll crown a (Miss) B Witched. It’s meant to be fun, not taken seriously — people have a really good time.”

The lunch and pageant will also have crafting corners for decorating hats and broomsticks. Then, the scavenger hunt begins.

“You’re given a list of clues and you need to figure out where to go to complete a task,” Kusibab said. “If you complete it, you get another clue from the business.

“The main focus is to get people into all of the businesses — and for every purchase they make, they’ll get an extra point.”

Extra points will also be awarded for finding special items. The team that earns the most points wins $100.

“It’s really fun to see everybody in their costumes running around town trying to solve clues,” Kusibab said. “They’ve having a good time and supporting local businesses. It’s all meant to be fun. It’s such a great place to be.”
