Oscoda’s Aviation History

The Wurtsmith Air Museum in Oscoda offers visitors a fascinating look into aviation history and the proud legacy of the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base. Housed in three hangars filled with aircraft, memorabilia, and interactive displays, the museum showcases everything from restored fighter jets and helicopters to flight gear, engines, and personal stories of those who served.

Exhibits highlight the base’s role during World War II, the Cold War, and beyond, preserving its importance as one of the nation’s oldest active air bases until its closure in 1993. Shortly after, dedicated volunteers transformed the site into a museum, ensuring that Wurtsmith’s aviation heritage continues to inspire and educate future generations.
