J&D Events has big plans for Oscoda in 2025
Jessica and Darryl Vollmers describe their family as “the real life Brady Brunch.” Between them, the couple has nine daughters, all of whom are involved to some degree with the family business: J&D Events.
The company, based in Oscoda, began after the duo married and Jessica changed the name of her business. She began organizing events around 2021 in Oscoda after relocating from South Texas.
“It was just about giving people stuff to do,” she said.
Perhaps the business’ best-known event is Touch a Truck, which saw thousands of attendees in 2024.
“We weren’t going to do it again this year,” Jessica said. “We had a lot going on, but my dearest husband talked me into it. It’s a really popular event. We’re doing that in September this year instead of June, and we’re working with the Iosco County Sheriff’s Office to benefit Shop with a Hero.”
The event will take place Sept. 20 and gives children (and adults) an opportunity to interact firsthand with some of the coolest trucks around, including those of first responders.
The couple has also organized adult prom, weddings and graduations, retirements and other community events like Hallo-Weekend, a Mask Parade, Nostalgia Nights, Car Shows and the New Year’s Eve Beach Ball Drop.
“We had one for adults (at midnight) and we filled the street,” Jessica said of the Beach Ball Drop. “We did an earlier one for the kids and we saw about 300 attend.”
Darryl was once an organizer of cornhole tournaments.
“I started as co-owner of Third Coast Cornhole and moved on to 45th Parallel Cornhole and we were all over the state,” he said. “I actually came to Jessica and offered to do tournaments at her events.”
And thus, a new family (and business) were born.
The duo will host a Nostalgia Night at Biggby Coffee on Saturday, May 24, and an American Graffiti Car Show and Pin-Up Contest on Saturday, July 5. They’re also planning an Oscoda Township First Responder Gala in the fall, where community members can purchase tickets for responders to enjoy a celebratory dinner.
Darryl, a firefighter himself, said it’s a good way for the community to show appreciation.
“It’s a nice thank you and a chance for them to realize people really do pay attention, they really do care,” he said.
