Although many trails around our region of the state have been closed due to the misfortune of sustaining damage during an early spring ice storm, we are fortunate that the trails of our county were not damaged. Iosco County trails remain clear, open, and ready for exploration.
Now is the time for an Oscoda trail adventure. Whether you like to get out for some high-octane mountain biking, or just some fresh air and a little stroll, Oscoda has just the trail for you. Start planning your getaway today!
In 2024, Oscoda received the Pure Michigan Trail Town designation. Because the area provides residents and visitors access to hundreds of miles of hiking, biking, paddling, equestrian, snowmobile and ORV trails, it has been deemed one of the best destinations in Michigan for trail exploration.
With access to more than 35,000 acres of landscapes, trails users can explore a wide range of terrain, from coastal sand dunes to towering pines and hardwoods. This ideal combination of diverse outdoor recreational opportunities along with friendly and helpful businesses and accommodations makes Oscoda a destination for travelers from around the globe.
We think the Highbanks Trail Area, which was recognized as a 2024 Pure Michigan Trail, is the perfect spot for a hike anytime of the year. This 7-mile multi-use trail system is set high above a bluff overlooking the AuSable River. This trail provides stunning panoramic views of the AuSable and the Cooke Dam Pond, so you won’t want to forget your camera. If you aren’t up for the hike, but don’t want to miss the view, take a stroll at the Lumberman’s Monument Visitors Center. You’ll find it the perfect spot to capture the spectacular views of the landscape.
Please note: Iargo Springs Interpretive Site, which is found along the Highbanks Trail is currently under construction. The stairs to the river will be under construction through July of this year, with an anticipated reopening in August.
The Wildcat Mountain Bike Trail
In 2018, the Iosco Bikes and Trails Group envisioned a single-track mountain bike trail that would provide an expedition through the Huron National Forest, following the contour of the AuSable River. 44 miles of trails are planned for development between Old Orchard Campground and Cooke Dam Road. Currently, the Wildcat features 15 miles of trail with sections full of exciting rollers and challenging climbs with rewarding views. The trail is open year-round and can be accessed at the Foote Site Overlook off River Road. Experience the beginning phase of this exciting trail on your next visit to Oscoda.
Eagle Run is a multi-season trail system with 3 looped trails that are maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers. With an ample 6′ width, the trails are perfect for shared use with bikers and hikers. Scenic views and a beautiful natural setting make this the perfect spot for trail exploration of every sort.
Popular in all seasons throughout the year, the Corsair Trail system offers 3 looped trails perfect for your outdoor adventure. The Corsair Trail system is a premier destination in our state with trail loops totaling 28.3 miles of single direction trails. Experience sunny open vistas, stands of fir trees and towering hardwoods along the edge of winding streams.
The Iosco Exploration Trail (IET) is a trail planned to span 44-miles across Iosco County as part of the Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail. Currently, there are four of eight phases of the trail project completed. A 15-mile portion of level, paved trail is now open from Pointe Road and US23 that you can follow north through Oscoda to River Road completing at Old Orchard Park on the Cooke Dam Pond. This beautiful trail welcomes both foot and bike traffic year-round.
