After being cooped up indoors all winter, we are ready to get back outside for some fresh air and sunshine and Oscoda is the perfect destination for a quick spring getaway. No need for planning, we have done the work for you. Just head to Oscoda and follow along on our early spring itinerary to make the most of your trip.
Day One
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at Mancino’s Pit Stop where you will find breakfast pizza that is sure to make your mouth water. For our first adventure we head west on East River Road to the Lumberman’s Monument Visitor’s Center where you can learn about Oscoda’s early lumbering history and access the Highbanks Trail Area. This 15-mile linear trail leads you along a bank high above the AuSable riverbank.
Take a casual stroll from the Visitor’s Center for breathtaking views (be sure to bring binoculars and/or your camera) or venture out further to the west about 2 miles to the Canoe Paddlers Monument honoring the annual AuSable River Canoe Marathon that span 120 miles along the AuSable.
Make your way back to the car, because it is time for lunch. Heading back east on River Road you will find Desi’s Lounge serving a menu of both American and south of the border favorites. You are sure to find something to hit the spot!
Once you are fueled up for the afternoon, you might just be ready for some more outdoor exploration. Heading further east on River Road you will find Eagle Run Hiking Trail. This 7 mile looped hiking trail is very well maintained and offers 3 looped trails making it the perfect spot to build your own hiking adventure. Enjoy the fresh air, newly blooming trees, spring wildflowers, and the sound of chirping birds returning to the region for the season. It’s just what you need to cure a case of cabin fever.
After a great day exploring the outdoors, it’s time for some casual dining and maybe a movie. Downtown Oscoda is home to the Office Lounge where you can enjoy a burger and a beer, and if you are so inclined, you can head across the street for a first-run movie at the newly restored Lake Theater.
As your day comes to an end you are going to need to find a cozy spot to rest. Although not everything has opened for the season during springtime, Anchorage Retreat Center, The Lake Huron Resort, Oscoda Lakeside Hotel, and Huron House Bed & Breakfast are all open year round and provide a comfortable place to rest for after a great day experiencing spring in Oscoda.
Day Two
After a relaxing evening, you will be ready for another day of exploration. Day two begins with breakfast at Mama’s Country Kitchen, a local favorite serving a menu of traditional breakfast dishes. After you are filled up and ready to go you might want to make a stop downtown for a little retail exploration. While there, you won’t want to miss To the Moon & Back, a specialty shop featuring enchanted treasures and a calendar of workshop and events.
Your afternoon begins with a choice of two adventures: the Sunrise Coast Birding Trail or the Sunrise Side Wine & Hops Tour. Both tours lead you north on US 23 along the lakeshore providing two very different experiences.
The Sunrise Coast Birding Trail highlights remarkable habitats along the breathtaking coastline. Follow the trail along 145-mile of mapped sites where you can view bird species native to the northern Michigan landscape.
Or maybe you would like to taste your way along the coast with the Sunrise Side Wine & Hops Tour. Follow this tour to experience local wines, craft beers, and ciders while enjoying local eateries and attractions along this scenic route. Either route is sure to delight!
End your second day of exploration back in Oscoda at a local favorite gathering spot, From Huron Out. You are sure to be delighted by their unique approach to pub menu favorites, which pair nicely with a famous Wiltse’s Brew.
